Participatory Performance

Instapals was an experiment in intergenerational relationship-building through curricula and community engagement. As part of a semester's study of aging and ageism in Design II & III classes, Stevens Institute of Technology design students engaged in creative research on aging and ageism. In this image, they display 'OLD PERSON IN TRAINING' t-shirts they designed to spark conversation about aging and ageism amongst their peers on campus.

A pair’s response to the prompt “How I start my day,” demonstrating different generations are not so different as we may thing they are.

Part of preparing for intergenerational Instapals, younger participants read, watched, and listened to perspectives on aging and ageism, before designing t-shirts claiming to be an ‘old person in training’ and wearing them for several days.
